TEACHING & LEARNING IN
CHILDHOOD
The program is designed to provide specific theoretical knowledge and wide practical experience in working with children.

Description:

Through this course Sprott-Shaw International Language College's TLC students will have an opportunity to learn about:

The milestones of child development and the basics of child's developmental psychology. Behaviour management and various discipline strategies in working with children play and educational activities for children (storytelling, music and dance,science,art and games). Health and safety of children and teachers interpersonal communication with parents and co-workers strategies in working with children who need special attention 's

All the classes are based on lectures (introducing the information), discussions and debates (to provide opportunities for students to interact and share personal point of view), practical hands-on activities (science, music, art and literature. An opportunity for students to try out various activities themselves before they do them with children), project presentations, role play scenarios, guest speakers (experts coming to the class to speak for the students) and field trips.

Course developed by: Katarina Jovanovic

Course Instructor: Katarina Jovanovic has been devoted to teaching children and adults for 20 years. She did her B.A (Sociology of Family) in Europe. She taught in elementary school classrooms and instructed Developmental Psychology to university students. For 2 years she participated in Family Research Study doing research work in several European countries.

In Vancouver she obtained her Early Childhood Education Post Basic Diploma (Focus on Special Needs). She taught and did family counseling in various school settings in BC. For the last 6 years she's been concentrated on teaching adults (prospective teachers) and curriculum development. She developed or taught ECE, CSW, TEC and SN courses at Burnaby College and Sprott-Shaw Community College and did a number of lectures and workshops at professional conferences and educational institutions in Vancouver. Besides teaching, she is currently working on her M.ED and writing literature for children.

Modules:

Child Development (3 weeks)

Child & Teacher Health and Safety (1 week)

Discipline and Behaviour Management (1 week)

Interpersonal Communication (1 week)

Activities for Children 3-10 (4 weeks

Working With Children who Need Extra Attention (1 week)

Practicum (1 week)

Evaluation:

Graduates of the TLC program will need to successfully complete all academic and practical requirements of this course, including those related to attendance. The break down evaluation is:

Assignments 50%
Exams 30%
Attendance and Participation 10%
Practicum 10%

Each course will bring a certain number of marks (presented in %). The total of all the marks from all the courses will be the student's final mark for the entire TLC program. Attendance and Participation will be evaluated for all the courses together by the end of the Program.

Objectives:

By the end of this program student teachers will:

- Have a solid knowledge of children's developmental psychology
_and a good understanding of the nature of childhood

- Have the updated information on children's health and safety


- Have the theoretical basis on exceptionalities and the strategies
_ to deal with them.


- Gain the ability to successfully communicate with parents,
_professionals and other teachers.

- Be able to control the classroom and to handle behaviour
_ problems


- Be able to collect their teaching resources and to implement
_them in practice. Through their hands-on work in the classroom
_and through their practicum, the students will gain experience
_and confidence in communicating and working with children.

Practicum: Students will need to complete a practicum arranged by the college. Participation is mandatory and the students will have a practicum assignment to complete.
